MSC Side Event: Roots of Resilience – Building Peace in an Era of Food and Climate Shocks
Munich, 15 February 2025
On February 15, 2025, the Nexus25 project hosted its annual side event at the Munich Security Conference (MSC), bringing together key stakeholders to discuss the growing interconnections between food insecurity, climate change, and global stability.
The closed-door discussion, co-hosted with the UN World Food Programme (WFP), gathered high-level representatives from think tanks, NGOs, national institutions, and international organizations. Participants explored how climate-driven food crises are exacerbating geopolitical instability and the urgent need for integrated strategies to enhance resilience in vulnerable regions.
Key themes included the impact of extreme weather events on global food systems, the role of sustainable development in conflict prevention, and how humanitarian aid, governance, and security policies must align to address systemic risks. Special attention was given to regions such as Africa and Southeast Asia, where climate-induced food insecurity is further aggravated by political instability and armed conflicts.
This discussion was part of a broader Nexus25 effort to engage bilateral and multilateral actors in 2025, fostering a more coordinated approach to food security and climate resilience within global security agendas.
Nexus25 is coordinated by IAI in collaboration with the Center for Climate and Security (CCS) in Washington, D.C., and funded by Stiftung Mercator, one of Germany’s largest private foundations.
